# Should ticketing platform migrations happen all at once or in stages?

> Trade-offs between big-bang and phased migration for events, brands and sales channels.

**A ticketing migration can switch all operations at once or move a controlled subset first. Phased migration often reduces the blast radius of defects, but ticket inventory, customer identities, payment reporting and barcode validation must not become inconsistent across systems.**

## When is a phased rollout appropriate?

A multi-venue group might migrate one venue or a future event series first, while existing on-sales remain on the old platform. Choose pilot events with representative workflows but manageable consequence if remediation is needed. Define a date when each event becomes owned by the new system.

## When might an all-at-once move be necessary?

If checkout, identity or reporting dependencies cannot safely run side-by-side, dual-operation complexity may exceed cutover risk. A single switch needs rehearsal, tightly controlled writes, clear communication and a credible contingency plan.

## What can go wrong with dual operation?

The same ticket or seat sold in two systems, split order histories, stale admission lists and uncertain refund ownership are common design risks to prevent. Agree a single source of truth for each event, seat, order and ticket status. If data must sync, define ordering, failure retries and reconciliation.

## How should rollback be planned?

Set go/no-go checkpoints, cutover ownership and decision times. Reversing traffic is not enough once new purchases exist: you must safely account for new orders, refunds and scanned tickets. A fail-forward approach may be safer than an untested rollback.

## Which cutover and rollback criteria should ticketing migration buyers agree?

Choose migration stages based on inventory, integration and operational dependencies, then define go/no-go and rollback criteria. Rehearse those steps against representative events and confirm how tickets sold during transition will be reconciled.
