# How do you design ticketing integrations for high-demand onsales?

> Protect shared inventory when partner APIs and integrations receive sudden onsale traffic.

**High-demand ticketing integrations should limit load, tolerate temporary errors and preserve a single authoritative view of available inventory.** Partners need predictable API contracts, sensible rate limits, retry rules, idempotency and an explicit strategy for temporary unavailability. Building a faster front end does not solve a slow or inconsistent reservation service.

## Why can integrations become a bottleneck?

A large partner promotion can produce simultaneous requests from a custom website, mobile app, affiliate sellers and operational systems. Each client may poll availability independently. If requests reach the same inventory database, multiple individually reasonable clients can produce an unreasonable aggregate load.

## What should the technical integration contract define for high-demand ticket onsales?

| Concern | Good design question |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Read traffic** | Can frequently requested non-sensitive data be cached safely? |
| **Writes** | Which operation atomically reserves tickets? |
| **Rate limits** | Is there a documented ceiling and backoff policy? |
| **Retries** | Are retryable errors distinguished from final failures? |
| **Idempotency** | Can an order or payment request be retried safely? |
| **Webhooks** | Can consumers deduplicate and replay event notifications? |
| **Monitoring** | Can partner and platform teams correlate a failed checkout? |

Cache descriptive event information separately from inventory state. A cached seat map may be useful for display, but a purchase must revalidate current availability before committing. If multiple channels sell the same capacity, route writes through shared authoritative rules, not separate spreadsheet reconciliations.

## How should rate limits work?

Publish limits and return clear error semantics where possible. Backoff with jitter reduces synchronised retries. A 429 response should not be treated like an irreversible purchase rejection. Clients should be able to distinguish delayed availability from a confirmed failure to reserve stock.

**Example:** An affiliate site showing “10 remaining” based on a cached response is only presenting an estimate. The inventory service must make the final availability decision when the basket is created.

## What should be rehearsed together?

Before a large onsale, test all material integrations at forecast concurrency, including third-party analytics tags, identity providers, payment endpoints and ticket-delivery systems. Establish who can pause traffic, disable a nonessential integration or switch to a fallback route. Product-specific API capabilities should be checked in the actual supplier documentation rather than assumed.
