# How do ticketing technology costs change as a business grows?

> Understanding fixed costs, variable costs and operating leverage for growing ticketing businesses.

**Ticketing technology costs do not necessarily rise in direct proportion to ticket volume.** Some expenses scale with transactions, traffic or payment value; others are fixed or step up when the business adds markets, customers, integrations, reliability requirements or support obligations. The key question is whether additional revenue requires proportionate additional engineering and operational effort.

## Which ticketing technology costs grow with sales volume?

| Cost driver | Typical behaviour | What to ask |
| ------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------- |
| **Payment processing** | Often varies with transactions and payment value | Who pays and settles fees? |
| **Compute and database** | Partly usage-driven, sometimes capacity-based | What is the real peak, not just average demand? |
| **Support** | Depends on exceptions and self-service design | How many contacts per 1,000 orders? |
| **Engineering maintenance** | Step-changes with bespoke features and incidents | What requires ongoing ownership? |
| **Compliance and integrations** | Step-changes by market and partner | Which obligations recur annually? |
| **Platform licensing** | Contract-dependent | Is pricing per ticket, revenue, venue or tier? |

## Why can growth reduce unit cost?

If reliable shared components serve multiple customers, the additional cost per order may fall as volume increases. However, custom deployments, local regulations, fragmented payment providers or bespoke integrations can reverse that advantage. Capacity planning must account for seasonal peaks; an infrastructure bill averaged across the year can conceal expensive onsale events.

## How can leaders calculate the real cost?

Compare **total annual technology cost divided by completed ticket orders**, but include people, incident response, vendor commitments, refunds, maintenance and required security work. Calculate separately by customer segment or geography if operating models differ. Payment fees should not be confused with ticketing platform costs when pricing models allocate them differently.

**Illustrative example:** An organisation with £600,000 in annual technology and operational cost processing 1 million paid tickets has a £0.60 blended cost per ticket. Doubling to 2 million tickets without hiring or infrastructure changes would reduce this to £0.30, but real businesses should forecast incremental spend and peak-capacity requirements before assuming that outcome.

## When should a growing ticketing business build or buy infrastructure?

In-house systems offer direct control but require a permanent product and engineering capability. External infrastructure can reduce the need to maintain common components, while creating vendor dependency and contract exposure. Evaluate the cost of capabilities the organisation *actually needs*, not simply the headline per-ticket charge.
