**General admission ticketing sells admission rights to a shared area or event without assigning a specific numbered seat. The operator controls the number of valid admissions rather than a map of individual seats.**

## Where is general admission used?

Standing concerts, festivals, clubs, exhibitions and some attractions use general admission. Buyers may choose a zone, entry time or ticket category, but not a particular physical seat. A venue can also combine standing admission with reserved seating.

For example, a 1,000-person standing area might have 900 tickets publicly on sale and 100 held for production, accessibility arrangements or partners. Those are operational allocations within the same physical limit—not separate pools of extra capacity.

## How should the capacity calculation work?

The system needs one authoritative view of capacity, sold tickets, active reservations, cancelled inventory, holds and legitimate releases. A reserved ticket in a basket should normally affect what others can purchase, even though payment is not complete. When a reservation expires, its capacity may return to sale according to configured rules.

| Inventory state | Customer impact |
| ---------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| **Available** | May be offered for new purchase |
| **Held in an active basket** | Temporarily unavailable to others |
| **Sold or issued** | Counts against allocated admission capacity |
| **Administrative hold** | Withheld from a sales channel |
| **Cancelled and released** | May be resold if policy permits |

## What changes when there are zones?

Separate standing zones, accessible areas and age-restricted sections may each need their own limits and admission conditions. A zone's tickets should be validated at the right entry point. Selling 500 tickets in Zone A cannot automatically use vacant space in Zone B where fire, access or event rules prevent it.

## What should teams test?

Run simultaneous last-ticket purchases, refund and reissue one admission, then verify scanning and capacity reports. Check whether the system counts unique ticket entitlements rather than just purchase orders. General admission is simpler to display than reserved seating, but no less dependent on sound inventory accounting.
