**Sales holds withhold tickets or seats from normal public sale for operational, contractual or customer-access reasons. House seats are one example, commonly reserved for venue, production or guest-list needs.**

## What kinds of holds exist?

A production may reserve seats for sightline checks, artists' guests, technical positions or late operational decisions. A promoter might have a contractual allocation. A venue may reserve accessible seating or companion spaces under applicable requirements. These are different purposes and should have appropriately restricted release processes.

**Do not confuse** an administrative hold with a customer's temporary basket reservation. An administrative hold is deliberately created by staff or rules; a basket reservation typically expires automatically.

## How should holds affect public availability?

The underlying seats still belong to the venue capacity. They should simply be unavailable to buyers who do not qualify. A held seat can be moved back into public sale after approval, but that does not create additional physical inventory.

| Control | Reason |
| -------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| **Named hold categories** | Distinguish contractual from production holds |
| **Permission to create/release** | Prevent accidental or unauthorised release |
| **Expiry or review date** | Avoid seats staying withheld after they are needed |
| **Audit trail** | Explain who changed an allocation and why |
| **Channel-specific rules** | Prevent one seller claiming another's quota |

## What should happen close to showtime?

Staff may release unused holds after a deadline, but the timing should reflect the agreement and the operational plan. If a seat is already issued as a comp or tied to an accessible arrangement, it must not be casually added back to the public pool.

## What needs checking in a new platform?

Create holds in several seat sections, limit staff access to specific groups, release a subset and run a seating availability report. Check whether the box office sees held seats differently from public checkout. The objective is not simply to hide seats on a visual map; it is to maintain an explainable inventory ledger.
