# How do ticket allocations work across multiple sellers?

> Explain inventory allocation, release rules and shared availability without overselling.

**Multi-seller ticket allocation is the process of assigning sellable inventory to different channels while retaining control of overall event capacity.** An allocation is not necessarily a completed sale: it may be a block of inventory reserved for a partner, box office, sponsor or internal use.

This guide focuses on **seller-level commercial and operational responsibilities**: what a promoter, agent or external seller is permitted to sell, how unused quotas return, and how the parties reconcile activity. For the broader mechanics of distributing stock between box office, direct checkout and other channels, see the separate guide on allocations across sales channels.

## What allocation models are used?

Fixed allocations ring-fence a quantity for a channel. Shared pools allow multiple sellers to compete for the same underlying availability. Hybrid models combine guaranteed partner allotments with a shared remainder. Reserved-seat events may allocate particular seats; general-admission events may allocate quantities.

| Allocation question | Why it matters |
| --------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| **Who can sell?** | Channel eligibility, dates and access codes |
| **What stock is reserved?** | Preventing double commitments |
| **When is it released?** | Recovering unused capacity |
| **Can it be overdrawn?** | Defined exception and approval rules |
| **How is it reported?** | Reconciling allocations, sales and remaining stock |

## How does an allocation change during an onsale?

An allocation starts with a committed capacity, decreases as tickets are issued and may release unused units to another pool at a cut-off. Returns, voids and exchanges can change the available quantity. For reserved seating, a release should restore the correct seats rather than a generic count. Audit logs should show each movement and responsible user.

**Illustration:** An event has 2,000 general-admission places. The operator holds 200 for access needs, allocates 300 to Partner A and 100 to Partner B, and initially places 1,400 in public sale. If Partner B releases 40 unsold places, those may return to general sale, provided capacity accounting and sale restrictions permit.

## What is the difference between an allocation and a basket hold?

An administrative allocation reserves inventory for a channel or purpose. A short-lived basket hold protects an individual buyer while they check out. Both reduce immediately available stock but have different owners, lifetimes and release rules. Treating them as the same concept can produce misleading reporting.

## What should a buyer ask their platform provider?

Ask whether allocations are channel-specific, seat-specific, time-bound, API-visible and auditable. Test imports and external seller refunds; ensure channel-specific reconciliation identifies tickets issued against each allocation. Avoid assuming that a reseller's report and the primary system's capacity ledger use the same definitions.
