**PCI DSS is an industry security standard for organisations that store, process or transmit payment-card information or whose systems could affect its security. For ticketing businesses, compliance responsibilities depend on the payment architecture and the organisation’s role.**

## What is in scope?

A ticketing checkout can accept card payments through redirects, hosted fields, embedded processor elements or a merchant-operated form. Those architectures do not create identical responsibilities. [Outsourcing card processing](https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/faqs/1092/) may reduce the systems handling cardholder data, but does not automatically remove all merchant obligations.

## How should a ticketing team assess responsibility?

Map the card-data journey from the customer's browser through the gateway, token storage, refunds, chargebacks and support workflows. Determine which company is the merchant, which provider handles card data and which systems can change payment behaviour. Work with the acquiring bank or qualified assessor on the correct validation method rather than assuming an assessment questionnaire.

| Question | Why it matters |
| --------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| **Does the ticketing server receive card numbers?** | Changes exposure and scope |
| **Can site scripts affect payment collection?** | Requires appropriate web security controls |
| **Who handles stored payment tokens?** | Determines access and lifecycle controls |
| **Who is responsible for incident response?** | Must be unambiguous across contracts |

## What should not be claimed?

A processor describing its own PCI compliance is not proof that the ticketing operator's entire checkout is compliant. Likewise, saying 'we never store card numbers' is narrower than saying 'we are out of PCI scope'.

## How should buyers compare providers?

Request a payment data-flow diagram, applicable attestations, a responsibility matrix and an explanation of checkout customisations. Review web security, access permissions, test environments and updates after payment-flow changes. PCI DSS is an ongoing operating obligation, not a one-time badge.
