# How does multi-currency ticketing work?

> A practical explanation of pricing, presentment, FX, settlement and refunds in multi-currency ticketing.

**Multi-currency ticketing allows a ticket seller to display, charge or report in more than one currency.** Those three activities are different: a customer may see an estimated local price, pay in an event currency and leave the organiser to receive proceeds in a separate settlement currency. A platform should define each currency explicitly rather than treating currency selection as a cosmetic checkout change.

## Which currencies matter in an order?

| Currency role | What it controls | Example |
| --------------------- | ----------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| **Base or catalogue** | Price configured by the organiser | EUR 50 |
| **Presentment** | Currency shown before payment | CAD equivalent |
| **Charge** | Currency actually submitted to payment provider | EUR or CAD |
| **Settlement** | Currency paid into merchant account | EUR, subject to provider setup |
| **Reporting** | Currency used to aggregate performance | GBP group reporting |

A system may support only a subset of these independently. A displayed conversion is not proof of a local-currency charge.

## How are exchange rates handled?

Where genuine converted-currency charging is supported, the business must decide whose exchange rate applies, when it is locked and whether markup or conversion fees exist. Display the charge currency and final amount clearly before authorisation. Exchange rates can move between browsing and purchase; the final amount must be determined by the actual charging flow rather than a stale illustrative conversion.

## What happens with fees, refunds and reporting?

Service fees, taxes and ancillary products need consistent currency treatment. A refund normally follows the original transaction through the payment provider; any difference in what the buyer's bank credits can depend on foreign exchange and card arrangements. For reconciliation, record original amounts and currencies, payment-provider reference, conversion and settlement fields separately. Avoid adding amounts in different currencies without a documented rate and timestamp.

**Example:** A UK-based group runs a concert in Poland. It may set ticket prices in PLN, let overseas customers see an indicative equivalent and settle earnings in a configured merchant currency. None of those choices is automatic; the payment provider, merchant entity and ticketing configuration determine the available combinations.

## What should operators ask a vendor?

Confirm which currencies can be configured on products, used for actual customer charges and used for payouts. Test purchases and refunds using each supported processor, verify rounding, zero-decimal currencies, downloadable reports and chargeback handling. [Nuweb's public ticketing overview](https://www.nuwebgroup.com/products/ticketing) confirms multi-currency selling and multiple payment gateways; that does **not** promise every currency, payment method and settlement combination works with every processor.
