**Theatres use subscriptions, fixed-series packages and priority booking rules to connect multiple performances to repeat customers. A workable system tracks which performances a package covers, which seats can be chosen, and when members become eligible to buy.**

## How do subscriptions differ from memberships?

A **ticket subscription** is primarily a purchasing entitlement: for example, a patron buys six performances within a season, or selects six performances from a larger programme. A **membership** is an audience relationship that may provide benefits such as early access or discounts, but does not necessarily include tickets. A theatre may sell both. Spektrix documents these as different products, with different financial treatment.

| Arrangement | Customer receives | Main operational question |
| ------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| **Fixed series** | A defined set of performances | Can the same seat be held across dates? |
| **Flexible subscription** | Credits or choices across eligible productions | What happens if a performance sells out? |
| **Membership** | Benefits for a period | How is current eligibility checked? |
| **Priority booking** | Earlier purchase window | Which patrons qualify, and when? |

## What must the ticketing system enforce?

1. **Eligibility:** Use the current membership or subscription state, rather than trusting a discount code alone.
2. **Entitlements:** Track consumed and remaining performance choices independently of payment receipts.
3. **Seat control:** Distinguish subscription holds from seats already issued as tickets so inventory is not oversold.
4. **Exceptions:** Define refunds, exchanged performances, expired entitlements and companion tickets.
5. **Box-office parity:** Staff-assisted bookings should evaluate the same entitlement rules as self-service checkout.

For example, a six-show subscriber may choose four productions today and complete the remaining two later. The system needs to reserve only the seats actually selected, while preserving the remaining subscription entitlement. It should not treat all six choices as ordinary independently paid orders.

## What should teams test before a new season?

Run a rehearsal with renewals, lapsed patrons, overlapping tiers, same-seat requests, near-sell-out performances and exchanges. Reconcile ticket revenue, membership contributions and charitable donations separately; they are not interchangeable accounting categories. See the existing guide to [membership and loyalty integration](/apis-integrations/how-does-ticketing-integrate-with-membership-and-loyalty-systems) for the cross-system angle.
