# What is a ticketing SDK?

> A definition of a ticketing software development kit and how SDKs differ from APIs, widgets and webhooks.

**A ticketing SDK (software development kit) is a collection of code libraries, tools and documentation that helps developers integrate ticketing functions into an application.** An SDK might handle API authentication, common request formats, seat selection or mobile wallet features. What it includes depends on the supplier.

## How is an SDK different from an API?

An API defines capabilities or interfaces, such as retrieving events or creating reservations. An SDK packages code that makes those interfaces easier to use in a specific language or platform. A developer can often use an HTTP API without an SDK; an SDK cannot access capabilities the underlying service does not expose.

An embedded widget differs again: it supplies a ready-made interface, whereas a conventional SDK supplies code building blocks. A webhook notifies another application when an event occurs; it is not a replacement for either an SDK or an API.

## Why might developers choose an SDK?

A well-maintained SDK can reduce boilerplate for authentication, pagination, validation and typed responses. Mobile-oriented kits may also expose platform-native capabilities for tickets, scanning or wallet integration. But SDK convenience has costs: dependency upgrades, compatibility constraints and sometimes limited access to newly released API functions.

## What should teams check before using a ticketing SDK?

| Question | Why it matters |
| -------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| **Which languages/platforms are supported?** | Determines deployment fit |
| **Is it officially maintained?** | Clarifies security and update ownership |
| **Are all required functions exposed?** | Prevents reliance on undocumented workarounds |
| **Can you inspect underlying requests?** | Helps debug booking and payment errors |
| **What happens when versions change?** | Avoids breaking checkout during upgrades |

## Does an SDK make a system headless?

Not by itself. A supplier can offer an SDK for a hosted checkout, an embeddable widget or a headless transactional system. Evaluate the integration model and reservation capabilities separately. In particular, ensure the SDK's stock and checkout flows behave correctly when the last available ticket is selected by multiple buyers.
