# Hosted vs embedded vs headless ticketing: what is the difference?

> Compare hosted, embedded and headless ticketing models by control, implementation effort and ownership.

**Hosted, embedded and headless ticketing describe different ways the customer-facing booking experience connects to ticketing technology.** Hosted typically sends buyers to a supplier-operated page; embedded places a supplied component inside another site; headless exposes backend capabilities so a developer can build the interface.

## How do the three models compare?

| Model | Customer-facing interface | Implementation trade-off |
| ------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- |
| **Hosted** | Supplier-managed booking page, potentially on a branded domain | Fastest setup, less journey control |
| **Embedded** | Widget or component within the organisation's website | Better continuity, subject to component constraints |
| **Headless** | Custom application using APIs or SDKs and backend services | More control, more engineering and responsibility |

The boundaries can overlap. A branded hosted checkout can use a custom domain; an embedded experience may hand payment off to a hosted page; and a headless solution may use prebuilt seat maps or wallet components. **These terms are implementation descriptions, not guarantees of data ownership or commercial terms.**

## How should an organisation choose?

A one-venue event series with standard booking needs may favour a hosted route. A retailer adding event tickets to an existing site may prefer an embedded component. An established ticketing platform that wants its own catalogue, app and booking flows may need headless APIs, but must test the actual transactional capabilities exposed.

## What does each model mean for maintenance?

Hosted suppliers generally maintain more of the customer interface. With embedded components, responsibility is shared: supplier upgrades can change widget behaviour while the publisher maintains the surrounding site. Headless teams own more application code, accessibility, instrumentation, consent flows and failure handling, even when the ticketing provider runs the reservation engine.

## What should buyers verify before choosing a hosted, embedded or headless ticketing model?

Confirm whether you can control domains, styling, customer login, payment methods, analytics, guest checkout, mobile experience and customer communications. Check whether the booking API supports reservations and payments rather than just event discovery. Also ask what happens when inventory changes between seat selection and checkout.
