# Custom vs prebuilt ticketing integrations: which should you use?

> A decision guide to custom, connector-based and middleware integration approaches for ticketing systems.

**Use a prebuilt ticketing integration when it reliably covers a standard workflow; choose a custom integration when the business process, control requirements or data mapping is genuinely different.** Neither option is automatically more enterprise-grade.

## When is a prebuilt connector enough?

A supported connector may be appropriate for a familiar CRM sync, analytics destination, email tool or payment service where the data model fits and the vendor maintains authentication and updates. Check the exact direction of data flow, supported objects, refresh frequency and failure handling—not just whether two brand logos appear on an integration page.

## When is custom development warranted?

Custom work is usually justified by unusual entitlement rules, embedded booking journeys, multi-brand tenancy, complex approval chains or proprietary finance systems. It also increases the need to maintain mappings, credential rotation, monitoring and compatibility after launch.

| Decision factor | Prebuilt route favoured | Custom route favoured |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| **Standard process** | Supported without material workarounds | Important steps unsupported |
| **Data model** | Fields and identifiers map cleanly | Complex transformations or ownership boundaries |
| **Release maintenance** | Connector supplier owns compatibility | Internal team can test and update changes |
| **Workflow control** | Supplier UX is acceptable | Bespoke checkout or entitlements essential |
| **Support accountability** | Vendor provides traceable incident handling | Team has engineering ownership and observability |

## What about middleware and hybrid architectures?

The decision need not be binary. A stable integration layer can combine prebuilt connectors for commodity services with custom logic for ticket inventory and customer identity. Design clear ownership: the ticketing system should remain authoritative for reservations, and finance should reconcile from trusted payment/settlement records rather than a marketing export.

## How should you compare the total cost of custom and prebuilt ticketing integrations?

Count build and ongoing maintenance, not just licence fees. Include vendor subscription, API quotas, security review, monitoring, incident support, upgrades, staff training and migration risk. Run a small proof-of-concept that performs a real booking or reconciliation scenario. A connector that needs constant manual correction is not low-cost merely because setup was fast.
